KOLINTANG MUSIC

Kolintang originates from the land of Minahasa in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The name “kolintang” is believed to come from the sound produced by the instrument: “tong ting tang.” In ancient times, kolintang was used in traditional ceremonies to call upon ancestral spirits and as a means of spiritual communication.
Initially, this instrument was made from lightweight local wood and played in a simple manner. However, after the influence of Christianity entered the region in the 19th century, the function of kolintang began to change. The music was no longer used for rituals, but instead developed into entertainment and stage performances.
In the 20th century, kolintang underwent modernization. Its tones were arranged similarly to Western musical instruments, allowing it to perform national and international songs. Today, kolintang has become a cultural symbol of North Sulawesi and is frequently performed at various events, even on international stages
