Gongs and traditional drums (tambur)

Gongs and traditional drums (tambur) are important musical instruments in Minahasan culture, North Sulawesi. In ancient times, they were used in rituals, traditional ceremonies, and war dances such as the Kabasaran Dance.
The gong is believed to have originated from East Asian influence and spread to the Indonesian archipelago through trade routes. The tambur (traditional drum), on the other hand, developed locally as a way to create rhythm for dances and ceremonies.
Historically, the sound of the gong represents power and grandeur, while the drum provides rhythm, energy, and spirit. Together, they create a sacred and energetic atmosphere in Minahasan cultural performances.
