Chinese Temple Ban Hin Kiong

Klenteng Ban Hin Kiong is the oldest and most famous Chinese temple in the city of Manado, located in North Sulawesi. The temple is situated in Manado’s Chinatown area and serves as an important center of religious and cultural activities for the local Chinese community.
The name Ban Hin Kiong itself means “Palace of Heavenly Blessings,” symbolizing hopes for blessings and protection from the gods. The temple was established around the early 19th century, approximately in 1817, by the Chinese community living in Manado.
Originally, the temple was built simply using wood and bamboo. Over time, it underwent several renovations and reconstructions, especially after suffering damage from fires in the past. Nevertheless, Ban Hin Kiong Temple still stands magnificently today and remains an important symbol of the history and presence of the Chinese community in Manado.
Inside the temple are various altars dedicated to deities in Taoist and Buddhist beliefs. The temple also becomes the center of major celebrations such as Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh, where thousands of local residents and tourists gather to enjoy cultural performances like lion dances and religious rituals.
With its beautiful traditional Chinese architecture and strong historical value, Ban Hin Kiong Temple has become one of the most attractive cultural and religious tourist destinations in Manado.
