Understanding the Tulude Ceremony

Tulude is an annual traditional ceremony of the Sangihe-Talaud people held every January 31st. The word "Tulude" comes from the Sangihe language meaning "to reject" or "to expel", referring to the ritual of expelling evil spirits and diseases from the community.

Tulude Ritual Sequence

This ceremony lasts for several days and includes various rituals such as the Masamper dance (a mass dance accompanied by singing), traditional processions, serving traditional food, and communal prayers. The colorful traditional Sangihe attire is a stunning sight during the ceremony.

Tulude in Manado

In Manado, the fairly large Sangihe community regularly holds Tulude ceremonies open to the public. The event is usually centered at Taman Kesatuan Bangsa or in various sub-districts that have strong Sangihe communities.
