Climbing Mount Lokon: A Volcanic Adventure in Tomohon

About Mount Lokon

Mount Lokon is an active volcano located in Tomohon City, about 25 km from Manado. At 1,580 meters above sea level, Mount Lokon is one of the favorite hiking destinations in North Sulawesi. The Tompaluan crater located between Mount Lokon and Mount Empung is an active crater that still frequently emits sulfurous smoke.

Hiking Trail

The ascent of Mount Lokon usually starts from Kakaskasen Village in Tomohon. The hiking trail takes about 3-4 hours to reach the summit, passing through dense tropical forest and open grasslands. The view from the summit is breathtaking, with panoramas of Manado City, Manado Bay, and Bunaken Island clearly visible on a clear day.

Always check volcanic activity status before climbing. Use experienced local guides, bring adequate climbing equipment, and start the climb in the morning to avoid bad weather in the afternoon.
