Gereja Sentrum Manado & World War II Monument: A Journey Through Manado’s History

In the heart of modern Manado stands a historic landmark that preserves an important chapter in the city’s past: Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM) Sentrum Manado. Located in the city center, Gereja Sentrum is known as the oldest church in Manado, with a history dating back to 1677. In its early years, it was known as the Gereja Besar or Oude Kerk Manado.
More than a place of worship, Gereja Sentrum has played an important role in the development of Manado and North Sulawesi. Established during the VOC period, its history is closely connected with the development of the Christian community in Manado.
Architecture That Tells a Story
Throughout its long history, Gereja Sentrum has undergone several changes and renovations. Nevertheless, several elements, including parts of its walls and pillars, have been preserved. Its architectural character also reflects the influence of Dutch Protestant church architecture, giving the building a distinctive historic atmosphere.
One of its most striking features is the large stained-glass window on the front facade, which adds a distinctive visual character to the historic church.
World War II Monument Beside the Church
Not far from Gereja Sentrum stands the World War II Monument, a historic monument closely connected with the church and the history of Manado.
During World War II, the former Gereja Besar Manado was destroyed by bombing. After the war, around 1946, a World War II monument was built beside the church area as a memorial connected to the victims of the war in the Pacific region. An architectural study from Sam Ratulangi University records that the monument was built around 1946 and features colonial architectural characteristics.
The monument gives the Gereja Sentrum area an even stronger historical significance. The church reflects the religious history and development of the city, while the monument serves as a reminder of the difficult period of World War II.
One Place, Two Important Stories
Visiting Gereja Sentrum is about more than seeing an old building. Here, travelers can experience how religious history, architecture, the development of Manado, and the history of World War II come together in one location.
For travelers taking a Manado City Tour, Gereja Sentrum is an interesting stop for discovering the historical side of the city before continuing to explore North Sulawesi’s cuisine, culture, and natural attractions.
